Supported Independent Living offers NDIS support services participants personal care and assistance.

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a type of NDIS-funded support designed to help people with disabilities live more independently, particularly those with higher or more complex support needs. At Para Ability Community Care (PACC), we are SIL providers in Adelaide offering supports that are tailored to each person’s goals, abilities, and preferences. Whether it’s help with daily tasks, personal care, or building confidence to take on new challenges, SIL accommodation aims to promote greater independence and improve quality of life in a safe, supportive home environment.

What does Supported Independent Living include?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) includes a range of supports that help people manage daily living more independently. This may involve assistance or supervision with personal care tasks, such as bathing, dressing, or managing medications. Support workers can also help with cooking meals, cleaning, doing laundry, and keeping the household running smoothly. Beyond everyday tasks, SIL accommodation also focuses on developing practical life skills, including budgeting, using public transportation, managing appointments, and fostering social connections. Support is flexible and tailored to each person’s needs, whether that means around-the-clock care, overnight supervision, or a few key hours during the day. In some cases, SIL can also include support for getting out into the community and maintaining social connections.

Who is SIL Accommodation for?

SIL accommodation is designed for individuals with disability who need a high level of support each day—often 24/7—to live safely and comfortably in their home. It’s most commonly accessed by people living in shared accommodation with other NDIS support services participants, although it can also support individuals living alone, depending on the level of care required. SIL accommodation may be suitable for individuals who require consistent support with daily routines, personal care, and household management, and who would benefit from having a team of support workers available to help them maintain independence and safety at home.

What SIL Accommodation does not cover

It’s important to understand that SIL only covers the support services required to help a person live independently—it does not include rent, groceries, or personal day-to-day living expenses. While SIL funding helps cover the costs of staffing and care supports, participants are still responsible for their accommodation, food, utilities, and other household expenses.

How is Supported Independent Living accessed?

SIL accommodation is included in a participant’s NDIS support services plan if it’s assessed as the most appropriate and reasonable support for their needs. The NDIS considers a range of factors, including the person’s current living situation, the level of support required, goals for independence, and input from allied health professionals. If SIL accommodation is deemed suitable, the funding and support levels are tailored to the individual. A support coordinator—like those on our team at PACC—can assist with navigating the process, finding suitable providers, and developing a roster of care that ensures consistent, person-centred support.

Build independence with SIL Accommodation through daily task support

Supported Independent Living helps build independence for people with disabilities by providing tailored support with daily tasks while actively fostering skill development and self-reliance. Here’s how SIL accommodation achieves this:

Support workers assist with essential activities, including cooking, cleaning, personal care, and managing medication. This support is tailored to meet each person’s unique needs and goals, enabling them to participate in daily routines as fully as possible.

SIL accommodation goes beyond simply doing tasks for individuals—it encourages and teaches them to take more initiative and do more for themselves. Support workers guide participants in learning new skills, such as meal preparation, budgeting, or using public transport, gradually increasing their ability to manage these tasks independently.

Individuals are supported to make choices about their routines, living arrangements, and the type of support they receive. This involvement promotes autonomy and a sense of ownership over their lives, which is key to building independence and confidence.

SIL accommodation is highly individualised, adapting to changing needs and aspirations. As people’s skills grow, support can be adjusted to encourage even greater independence, ensuring individuals are always challenged but not overwhelmed.

SIL accommodation also includes support for engaging in social activities and community life, which builds confidence, communication skills, and a sense of belonging—all important for living independently.

By providing encouragement and emotional support, SIL accommodation helps individuals manage stress, build resilience, and develop the self-belief needed to take on new challenges.

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a crucial NDIS support service as it enables people with significant disabilities to live with dignity, choice, and greater independence in the community, with the right level of professional assistance tailored to their needs.
