PACC helps participants access the right transport options suited to their needs, goals, and routines.

Safe and reliable transport is vital for everyone, especially for those living with a disability. Assisted Transport refers to the tailored support provided through the NDIS transport funding, and helps individuals overcome barriers to independent travel. Whether it’s getting to medical appointments, work, school, or catching up with friends, Assisted Transport Services is all about helping people stay connected and live life on their own terms.

Assisted Transport Services ensures that individuals have the freedom and confidence to move through their day with ease, without always needing to rely on family or informal carers.

What does Assisted Transport include?

Assisted Transport Services can look different for everyone, depending on individual goals and mobility needs. It may include:

Eligible participants may receive NDIS transport funding to cover travel costs for taxis, rideshare services, or specialised disability transport providers. The level of funding is based on personal circumstances, including how often someone needs to access work, education, or the community.

For people with significant mobility challenges, transport support may include access to wheelchair-accessible vehicles or vans fitted with ramps, lifts, or other modifications.

Sometimes it’s not just the ride that’s needed, but a helping hand along the way. Funding can include a support worker to accompany the participant during travel, offering reassurance, physical assistance, or communication support.

If a person is able and wants to use public transport, support may also include training to build the confidence and skills needed to use buses, trains, or trams safely and independently.

In some areas where public transport is limited, local community programs can step in to provide more accessible travel options, and these may be included in a participant’s plan.

Who is eligible?

Eligibility for Assisted Transport Services is determined by how a person’s disability impacts their ability to use public transport on their own. This is assessed on a case-by-case basis through the NDIS planning process. If a participant is unable to travel safely or independently because of their disability, they may be entitled to transport funding and supports as part of their NDIS plan.

Levels of support

The NDIS support services offer three different levels of transport support, depending on how frequently the participant needs to access the community for things like work, study, or social participation.

For participants not working, studying, or attending day programs (but seeking to enhance community access).

For participants working or studying part-time (up to 15 hours per week), attending day programs, or engaging in social/recreational activities.

For participants working, looking for work, or studying at least 15 hours per week and cannot use public transport due to their disability.

Purpose and advantages of Assisted Transport in Adelaide

Promoting independence and autonomy

Assisted Transport plays a vital role in supporting individuals with disability to live more independently. By providing safe and reliable travel options tailored to their needs, people can manage their daily routines, appointments, and social lives without relying solely on family or informal carers. This sense of control over how and when they travel helps build confidence, empowers personal decision-making, and supports a more autonomous lifestyle.

Reducing social isolation

Without accessible transport, many people with disability risk becoming isolated from their communities and support networks. Assisted Transport helps break that isolation by making it easier to visit friends and family, attend local events, or get out and about. With the proper support in place, participants can stay socially connected, maintain relationships, and enjoy a more fulfilling and balanced life.

Access to work, education, healthcare, and social life

From attending medical appointments to commuting to work or school, Assisted Transport Services makes essential activities possible for people who may otherwise be unable to travel independently. It ensures that practical needs like health and education are met, while also supporting broader life goals, such as joining community groups, going shopping, or catching up with friends. These daily connections are essential for overall wellbeing and participation in society.

Removing barriers to community participation

Transport should never be a barrier to joining in with the world around you. Assisted Transport helps remove that obstacle by offering the means to get involved in community activities, events, and programs. Whether it’s attending a local club, volunteering, or simply enjoying a day out, having access to the right transport support makes community life more accessible, inclusive, and welcoming for everyone.

Reduced reliance on family and carers

Assisted Transport Services provides individuals with the freedom to move through their day without always needing to depend on family members or carers for every trip. By offering practical support—such as direct transport funding, access to accessible vehicles, and support worker assistance when required—the NDIS helps participants take greater control over their schedules. This independence allows people to attend appointments, go to work, or enjoy social activities at times that suit them, rather than working around someone else’s availability. Over time, this reduced reliance strengthens a participant’s sense of autonomy, encourages decision-making, and fosters the self-confidence needed to live a more self-directed and empowered life. For families and carers, it also offers peace of mind, knowing their loved one has reliable support to navigate the community safely and independently.

At PACC, we see every day how reliable transport makes a difference. Assisted Transport Services isn’t just about getting from A to B—it’s about making everyday life more accessible, inclusive, and fulfilling. For many people living with a disability, travel can be a significant barrier to independence. Assisted Transport helps remove that barrier by offering the practical and financial support needed to travel with confidence and ease. It opens doors to new opportunities, supports community engagement, and gives people the tools they need to live independently and on their terms.
